FVA 2018 — Family Relationship
Sections 12–14 summary
Under s 12 Family Violence Act 2018, person A is in a family relationship with person B if A:

s 12(a) Is a spouse or partner of B (including de facto partner, civil union partner, or common biological parent).
s 12(b) Is a family member of B — related by blood, marriage, civil union, de facto relationship, adoption, or whānau / culturally recognised family group.
s 12(c) Ordinarily shares a household with B (note: employer/employee or tenant-only arrangements are excluded — s 13).
s 12(d) Has a close personal relationship with B, considering the nature, intensity, place, manner, and duration of time spent together (s 14). Includes care/carer relationships.

⚠️ Note: This tool automatically checks s 12(a)–(d) based on the connection types you enter. For s 12(c) (shared household) add a flatmate/housemate connection. For s 12(d) (close personal relationship) add a caregiver or care-recipient connection.
